Betty Johnson, 88, of McNabb, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, faith, and service that touched countless lives throughout Putnam County. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday July 25, 2026, from 2-4pm at the McNabb Fire Station. Cremation rites have been accorded. Betty was born April 15, 1938, in Spring Valley, IL to Charles and Elizabeth (Benson) Haws. She was a 1956 graduate of John Swaney High School. She graduated with honors from the University of Illinois Chicago in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. She found her calling in the various different ways she cared for others. She taught nursing students at Methodist Hospital in Peoria. She cared for patients both in and out of the hospital, working in several specialty areas of nursing including obstetrics, surgical recovery, and hospice. She served as a nurse for over 50 years before retiring to become more active in community volunteer work. She also answered the call as an EMT, providing comfort and lifesaving care to neighbors and strangers alike during her 27 years with the PC EMS. When needed, she even took to the skies and served as a flight nurse to help critically ill and injured patients reach the care they needed. She also served her community through various organizations such as PC ESDA, McNabb-Magnolia Junior Women's Club, McNabb American Legion Auxiliary, Putnam County Rotary Club. She was involved with the Red Cross as a blood and platelet donor and volunteer. Betty was fueled by a profound purpose and unwavering faith. She was a member of the McNabb Methodist Church, where she served as board president and lay speaker. She was actively involved in Missionary work and helped with Backpack Ministries. While Betty's life was filled with service to others, her greatest joy and accomplishment was her family. She loved spending time with them. She was an avid U of I fan. She could be seen enjoying a Diet Coke while often completing a crossword puzzle. She found happiness in life's simple moments. She loved fiercely, gave generously, and quietly put the needs of others before her own. Her kindness was often found behind the scenes - in meals prepared, the hands held, the prayers offered and the countless acts of service that often went unnoticed. She was happiest making life better for those around her. Betty is survived by her daughter, Lisa Johnson; her sons, Bruce Johnson and Brandon (Becky) Johnson; her cherished grandchildren: Ashley, Cassie, Sarah and Alex; and her brother, Schuyler (Cathy) Haws; two nieces Christine Haws and Vicki Harms, 2 great-nieces and a great-nephew; Also, a special cousin Valerie.
