Douglas J. Schweickert, 72, of Peru, IL, passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at home surrounded by family after a courageous five-year battle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife, Rorie (Luther), of 49 years; his son Steven (Amanda) Schweickert of Peru, IL; son, Scott (Colleen) Schweickert of Peru, IL; three grandsons – Arlo, Bennett and Charlie; and two brothers, Thomas Schweickert and Gerald “Ozzie” Schweickert. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Paul Schweickert, Richard “Dick” Schweickert, and William “Bill” Schweickert.
Doug was a graduate of Hall High School, Class of 1970. He received his undergraduate degree from Bradley University in 1973 and Juris Doctorate from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1976. He was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1977 and practiced law until the end.
He enjoyed watching the Fighting Illini and the Chicago Cubs, Sox, Bulls, and Bears; and was a savvy player of poker.
Above all else, Doug epitomized the ideal of hard work. He served as Corporation Counsel and advised for the City of Peru for over 40 years, helping guide the City’s development. He was a dedicated and beloved member of the community, often offering guidance and mentorship to other professionals.
Doug was a generous philanthropist and contributed to countless charitable programs and organizations throughout the Illinois Valley. Through the Doug and Rorie Schweickert Charitable Trust, he helped fund construction of several public improvement projects in Peru, including the bandshell at Centennial Park, the baseball stadium at Veteran’s Memorial Park, and icehouse at Washington Park. He was a significant contributor to Lighted Way’s new school and, most recently, made plans to provide for the construction of an all-inclusive playground at nearby Baker Lake.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Per Doug’s request, there will be no public services held. Private Graveside services will be at later date in Peru City Cemetery.

Memorials may be given in memory of Doug to the Peru Volunteer Ambulance Service.
