Howard "Moe" Schmidt

Howard R. “Moe” Schmidt 90 of Peru. Died 1:54 PM May 29, 2015 in IVCH. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday 11: 00 AM in St Valentine Church. Monsignor J. Brian Rejsek will officiate. Peru Veterans memorial Group will conduct a Flag Folding service following the mass. Burial will be at a later date in St Valentine Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday morning in the church from 10:00 AM till time of services. Ptak Funeral Home has been entrusted with handling the services. Howard was born September 25, 1924 in Peru to Albert and Lillian (Jernowski) Schmidt. He married Emily Rotsart May 25, 1957 at St Patrick’s Church in La Salle. Moe was a standout 3 Sport Athlete at St Bede Academy. He received All- State honors at fullback for football in 1942. He received a Scholarship to play Football at Purdue University .But after one year decided to serve his country. He served in the Army Air Force during WWII serving in Asiatic- Pacific Theatre. Receiving Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal with 1 Bronze Battle Star. Moe worked for the City of Peru and then retired from LTV Steel. He was a member of St Valentine Church. He was part of the first class to be inducted into the St Bede Hall of Fame. He is survived by 2 sons Russell (Christie) Schmidt of Peru and Robert (LeAnn) Schmidt of LaSalle.4 Grandchildren Janessa (Eric) Heider, Callie Schmidt, Brandon and Daniel Schmidt. 3 Great Grandchildren. 2 Sisters in Law Delores Kowalski and Arlene Rotsart. He was preceded in death by his wife in 2010, 3 sisters Dorothy Yasm- Dierr, Dolores Retat and Virginia Baird and 1 brother Edward “Dutch” Schmidt.
