Patricia Degutis- Vaccaro Cherny, 90 of Peru, passed away August 13, 2025, in her home of over 60 years, surrounded by her family.

Patricia was born June 5,1935 in the loving home of her grandparents Joseph and Antoinette Gedraitis of Oglesby, who raised her. She married the love of her life, Edward (Jesse) Cherny on September 15, 1956, in the Queen of the Holy Rosary Church La Salle. During her lifetime, she worked at Illinois Bell and several area factories.

Patricia is survived by her son Mark Cherny of Lake Wildwood, 2 daughters, Michelle Cherny (Cherry Richardson) of Peru, Carrie Straube of La Salle, 2 grandsons, whom she adored, Joshua Cherny of Florida and Raymond Straube (Aaliyah Lyon) of Peru. She is also survived by her sister Sharon Pettigrew of Peru, her brother Roger Vaccaro (Mary Helen) and her brother-in-law Bill Trump of Oglesby.

Patricia was preceded in death by her husband, her grandparents and her sister Kathleen Trump and most recently, her beloved furry companion, Lulu.

Mom was the strongest woman we knew. She taught us to be independent thinkers. She and Dad raised 3 college graduates. Their honest, hard work ethic was passed on to us all. And we learned early in life, to share with others in need, no matter the sacrifice.

Patricia’s grandsons wish to note:

Grandma’s life was a testament to her generosity, resilience and unwavering love. She gave without hesitation, met hardship with grace and loved with a depth that made us feel valued and seen. With eternal gratitude, Ray and Josh.

Cremation rites will be accorded with private inurnment to take place at Peru City Cemetery at a later date. Ptak Funeral Home is assisting family with the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to donor’s choice.
